Cheesy Beef Lasagna with Rich Layers of Sauce
Ingredients:
Meat Sauce:
1 lb (450g) ground beef
1 onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
1/2 cup tomato sauce
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon dried basil
Salt and pepper to taste
Cheese Filling:
1 cup ricotta cheese
2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded
1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
1 egg
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Other Ingredients:
12 lasagna noodles, cooked and drained
2 cups shredded mozzarella (for topping)
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
To prepare the meat sauce, heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic, sautéing until softened (about 3 minutes). Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain any excess fat.
Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer the sauce for 10-15 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
In a separate bowl, mix the ricotta cheese, 2 cups of mozzarella, Parmesan, egg, and nutmeg until well combined.
To assemble the lasagna, spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom of the baking dish. Place 4 lasagna noodles on top. Spread half of the cheese mixture over the noodles, followed by a layer of the meat sauce. Repeat with another layer of noodles, cheese mixture, and sauce. Finish with a final layer of noodles and the remaining meat sauce.
Sprinkle 2 cups of shredded mozzarella over the top of the lasagna.
Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is golden and bubbly.
Let the lasagna rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
