Cheesy Croque Monsieur Sandwich

Ultra-creamy, crunchy, cheesy… and ready in under 20 minutes!


Ingredients (for 2 sandwiches):

  • 4 slices of white or brioche bread
  • 4 slices of ham
  • 4 slices of Gruyère or Emmental cheese (or mozzarella for easy melt)
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional)
  • *Salt, pepper, and grated *nutmeg to taste
  • Grated cheese (to top)

Instructions:

  1. Make the béchamel sauce (white sauce):
  • In a small saucepan, melt butter.
  • Whisk in flour and stir for 1 minute.
  • Gradually add milk while whisking until thick and smooth.
  • Season with salt, pepper, nutmeg, and a bit of mustard.
  • Remove from heat.
  1. Assemble sandwiches:
  • Spread a little béchamel on the inside of each bread slice.
  • Add ham and sliced cheese.
  • Close the sandwich and spread béchamel on top of each.
  1. Add extra cheese on top (as shown in the picture).
  2. Bake or pan-fry:
  • Oven: Bake at 200°C (390°F) for 10–12 minutes until golden and bubbling.
  • Pan: Cook on a nonstick pan with butter over low heat until both sides are crispy, then finish under the broiler with cheese on top if desired.
