
Ultra-creamy, crunchy, cheesy… and ready in under 20 minutes!
Ingredients (for 2 sandwiches):
- 4 slices of white or brioche bread
- 4 slices of ham
- 4 slices of Gruyère or Emmental cheese (or mozzarella for easy melt)
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon flour
- 1 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional)
- *Salt, pepper, and grated *nutmeg to taste
- Grated cheese (to top)
Instructions:
- Make the béchamel sauce (white sauce):
- In a small saucepan, melt butter.
- Whisk in flour and stir for 1 minute.
- Gradually add milk while whisking until thick and smooth.
- Season with salt, pepper, nutmeg, and a bit of mustard.
- Remove from heat.
- Assemble sandwiches:
- Spread a little béchamel on the inside of each bread slice.
- Add ham and sliced cheese.
- Close the sandwich and spread béchamel on top of each.
- Add extra cheese on top (as shown in the picture).
- Bake or pan-fry:
- Oven: Bake at 200°C (390°F) for 10–12 minutes until golden and bubbling.
- Pan: Cook on a nonstick pan with butter over low heat until both sides are crispy, then finish under the broiler with cheese on top if desired.
