Ultra-creamy, crunchy, cheesy… and ready in under 20 minutes!
Ingredients (for 2 sandwiches):
4 slices of white or brioche bread
4 slices of ham
4 slices of Gruyère or Emmental cheese (or mozzarella for easy melt)
2 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon flour
1 cup milk
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional)
*Salt, pepper, and grated *nutmeg to taste
Grated cheese (to top)
Instructions:
Make the béchamel sauce (white sauce):
In a small saucepan, melt butter.
Whisk in flour and stir for 1 minute.
Gradually add milk while whisking until thick and smooth.
Season with salt, pepper, nutmeg, and a bit of mustard.
Remove from heat.
Assemble sandwiches :
Spread a little béchamel on the inside of each bread slice.
Add ham and sliced cheese.
Close the sandwich and spread béchamel on top of each.
Add extra cheese on top (as shown in the picture).
Bake or pan-fry :
Oven : Bake at 200°C (390°F) for 10–12 minutes until golden and bubbling.
Pan : Cook on a nonstick pan with butter over low heat until both sides are crispy, then finish under the broiler with cheese on top if desired.
